How CASCO works abroad
Travelling abroad in your own car means saving money on tickets, having a holiday according to an individual schedule, and driving unique routes. But unforeseen situations on the roads are twice as unpleasant in a foreign country. It's better to prepare for them in advance so as not to spoil your holiday with such problems.
When travelling abroad by private car, Ukrainian tourists are required to take out a Green Card policy, an analogue of the CTP insurance. The insurance company will compensate the victims of an accident that occurred in another country through the fault of the policy holder. The culprit will have to pay for the repair of their own car. If the accident was caused by a foreign citizen, the costs will be reimbursed by his or her insurer.
Full protection against road accidents, regardless of the initiator of the accident, is provided by a motor hull insurance policy valid abroad. Some insurance companies (ICs) extend the insurance coverage for one or more countries for an arbitrary period of time at no extra cost. There are insurers that charge for this option.
Why do you need motor third party liability insurance abroad?
The rules of voluntary car insurance do not differ from the conditions on domestic roads. Depending on the chosen set of risks, CASCO guarantees compensation for losses if a road accident abroad was caused by the policyholder. This risk is chosen by most car owners for foreign trips. If you wish, you can choose a full hull insurance policy that covers:
- theft
- damage to the car;
- fire, explosion;
- complete loss of the car;
- falling objects on the car;
- damage by animals and birds.
The cost of a voluntary car insurance policy with a full range of options is the highest, and the probability of occurrence of all these events is low. A rational option is to include only the risk of a road traffic accident in the contract if it is a short-term trip abroad. The sum insured under the EUROCASCO contract is equal to the estimated value of the car. In addition to the risks of theft, destruction, and damage to the car, you can choose round-the-clock personal assistance.
What to do if an insured event occurs
It is important to use EUROCASCO correctly in the event of an insured event. The first mandatory step is to call the insurance company where the policy was issued and follow the instructions of the contact centre representative. Phone numbers for communication are indicated in the insurance contract.
Further actions:
- Calling the traffic police;
- recording the circumstances of the accident on video or photo. You need to take pictures of all the cars involved in the incident and write down the contacts of witnesses. It is important not to do anything that would change the pattern of the accident;
- clarify the availability and type of car insurance policies of the parties to the accident. It is advisable to take photos of the documents;
- providing the necessary documents to the police. If you are required to sign any papers but do not understand their content, you do not need to sign them. The documents should be marked "I do not understand the language".
If there are no casualties in the accident, you can use the Europrotocol, but you should do so only if you are absolutely sure that the document is correctly filled out in a foreign language. At the request of car owners, the police will provide a copy of the accident report.
Further, there are two possible scenarios: car repair in a foreign country in a network of partner service stations or in Ukraine. In the first case, the insurance company compensates the costs at the rates applicable in our country. If the car is unable to move on its own, the evacuation of the vehicle to the service station is organised independently. The IC indemnifies transportation costs within the limit specified in the contract on the basis of receipts, invoices, and acts of work performed.
For full or partial repairs in a foreign country, it is recommended to take photographs of the general plan, odometer readings, VIN code and damage, close-up, from several angles. Upon completion of the restoration work, it is necessary to take photos of the replaced parts and assemblies.
If you decide to restore the car in Ukraine, you need to arrive at the IC's claims office within two business days, agree on the inspection of the damage, and get a list of documents for compensation. You should not repair the damage before the inspection.
CASCO payments are made within 5-10 days after the documents are submitted.
What to consider when applying
The extension of the CASCO geography is documented in an additional agreement. When concluding it, it is important to find out information about the territories included in the insurance coverage area, to find out whether there are any exceptions. Compared to a regular policy, EUROCASCO costs 10-15% more, but the figure is approximate and depends on the specific insurance company.
