You can protect your financial position in critical situations with the help of an insurance system. It is based on a contractual relationship between the client and the company. First, the consumer draws up documents and buys an insurance policy. It must specify the type of insurance, list insured events, and determine the amount and mechanism of compensation. In the event of force majeure, the company undertakes to make appropriate payments. This system is mutually beneficial for both parties. We will discuss how to behave in the event of an insured event in this article.

What is an insured event?

This is the name given to an event that has occurred and is included in the list of critical situations listed in the insurance contract. According to the law on insurance, the company is obliged to compensate for the damage sustained by the insured.

The cases may include:

  • fires, floods, flooding, theft - in the case of home and car insurance (hull insurance)
  • illnesses, injuries - if a health insurance contract protecting life and health has been issued;
  • road accidents. On the basis of a compulsory motor TPL insurance policy, the injured driver will receive compensation from the insurer of the person responsible for the accident;
  • extraordinary events while travelling abroad. Travel insurance protects against them.

In all these situations, a person needs to contact representatives of his or her insurance company as soon as possible, report the problem, and consult on further actions. The terms for transferring such information are specified in the contract. They range from 3 to 30 days. The decision to credit the funds will be made after receiving the full package of documents.

What to do if an insured event occurs

In a critical situation, everyone can get confused, but you should pull yourself together and try to call the company's hotline immediately. Reliable organisations provide information support around the clock.

They will answer the question of whether the event is an insured event, call an ambulance if necessary, and send a representative to the accident site.

If the policyholder is abroad, they will contact a partner organisation that will provide support to the tourist.

In case of damage to property at home or in an apartment, you should try to reduce the consequences. For example, in the event of a fire or gas explosion, the relevant services are called, and in the event of a pipe burst, the emergency service from the operating company is called.

When an accident occurs, the parties involved should estimate the approximate damage. If it does not exceed 50 thousand for each of the parties, and citizens have electronic MTPL policies, they can issue a Europrotocol online on the MTIBU website. In case of the slightest disagreement by one of the parties, all papers should be filled out in the presence of the police.

Detailed photographs from the scene of the accident are mandatory documents for calculating payments. Before the arrival of services (police, doctors, representatives of service companies, if something happened to the apartment), it is necessary to take pictures of the damaged property from different angles. For a car, it is important that at least one of the photos clearly shows the number plates.

In addition, you should not forget to check with the customer service department to find out when and in what form you should file a claim for compensation. Ask for a list of documents required for the accrual of funds.

Documents for applying to the insurance company

The list of documents required for the calculation of compensation in the event of an insured event includes three main ones

  • a statement about the incident, drawn up according to a certain sample (sometimes filled in on a letterhead);
  • documents confirming the identity of the applicant. These are a passport, identification code, driver's licence (in case of road accidents);
  • a copy of the insurance contract (on paper or in electronic form).

In addition, you will need documents confirming the fact of the event and the client's expenses. For different types of insurance, these may include

  • for medical or travel insurance - doctor's reports, prescriptions, receipts for treatment in a clinic, receipts confirming the purchase of medicines, etc;
  • for automobile (CTP) - a Euro protocol drawn up independently (the amount of payments is limited), signed by both parties, photographs from the scene. If the police were called, a certificate, a report on an administrative offence, etc;
  • for housing - a certificate from the competent authorities (housing office, emergency services) about what happened. You may also need documents confirming your ownership;
  • for hull insurance. If the car is stolen, you need to provide a document confirming the registration of the crime with law enforcement agencies. If the car is damaged, you need to bring a conclusion from the service centre about the breakdown and the cost of compensation.

Insurance companies may ask for additional documents. Most often, it is necessary to confirm the amount of damage caused. These can be invoices, estimates of repairs, and various acts. You need to keep receipts for transporting the car to the service station, evacuation from the accident site, taxi bills to a medical facility (if you got there on your own). All this can be clarified by calling the Hotline.

It is important to submit all these papers within the time limits specified in the contract. In some situations, insurance companies allow you to fill out an application online and send the documents by one of the electronic communication methods - by e-mail or fax. However, you should also consult about this in a particular situation.

When an insured event is deemed to have occurred

Each insurance contract clearly states the risks - the situations that are considered insured events. For example, for a hull insurance contract, the risks may include:

  • road traffic accidents;
  • fires;
  • damage caused by the fall of any object (relevant in the event of hurricanes, natural disasters, earthquakes);
  • illegal actions of third parties;
  • theft;
  • actions of animals, etc.

All damages to the car caused by the above-mentioned risk will be considered insured events.

They are considered to have occurred in almost all non-standard situations. If they occur, you should contact the company and ask for compensation. Experts advise that all the nuances should be clarified not after the event, but at the time of concluding the contract. For this purpose, each organisation employs consultants who are ready to answer all questions.
