Electronic Europrotocol in CMTPL and how to use it
Modern life is increasingly accustoming us to using digital documents. We are already used to making payments online and keeping our car insurance policy in our smartphones. Today, it is also possible to fill out the European protocol in case of an accident in electronic form. In this article, we will discuss when this is allowed and how to avoid mistakes during the procedure.
When you can use the European protocol
European protocols greatly simplify the life of car owners. These are special forms of a standard form that can be downloaded and filled out independently. The advantage of using them is that you can
- save time. Those involved in an accident do not need to wait for the police to arrive. They can leave the scene immediately after the document is completed;
- reduce their expenses. Drivers don't have to pay a fine for traffic violations. They are exempt from administrative liability.
But you should be very careful about filling out this electronic document and contact your insurance company for payments within the next 3 days after the accident. They will consider the situation. If the Europrotocol is drawn up correctly, compensation will be awarded without requesting additional certificates or an administrative protocol.
The structure of the document is the same for insurance companies across the country. The electronic form can be found on the website of the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine (MTIBU). You will be able to take advantage of the online form if the following conditions are met
- no one complains about their health after the accident and no one is injured;
- only 2 cars were involved in the accident;
- both drivers have CMTPL policies and no one has any claims against each other. There are no contradictions in any of the points of the European Protocol;
- all participants in the collision are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
- the amount of damage caused does not exceed UAH 50 thousand, or the driver who is at fault for the accident is willing to pay the required amount.
In order to fill out the electronic Europrotocol, you will need a smartphone or tablet with an internet connection. You will also need a good camera to take high-quality pictures of the scene, driver's licences and technical passports.
When not to use the European protocol
Unfortunately, this convenient and progressive way of processing documents after an accident is not always possible. In particular, you will have to call the police and draw up an administrative protocol in the following cases:
- one of the parties does not admit its guilt, does not agree with the opinion of the other;
- there are people injured in the accident, other cars are damaged;
- one or both drivers do not have a valid MTPL insurance policy, the data specified in it is suspicious;
- at least one of the cars has foreign licence plates, or one of the car owners has foreign insurance.
In addition, if the amount of damage exceeds UAH 50,000, then law enforcement officers will be required. If the amount of the refund is expected to be large, the insurance company will not be able to pay it on the basis of an independently completed electronic protocol. Its representatives will require additional papers from the police.
How to fill out the electronic version correctly
The electronic Europrotocol should be filled in on the MTIBU website. On its home page, there is a transition to the digital document format. The driver is advised to follow the instructions and enter the data step by step in the windows that open. After confirming that they are familiar with the conditions for filling out the report, the parties to the accident will need to enter the following information
- Identification codes of insurance policy holders and vehicle licence plates. In this way, the system checks the availability of valid MTPL policies;
- photos of the accident from 4 sides. A special page will open for the car owner to attach the files;
- photos of driver's licences and vehicle registration certificates. If they are not available, the data can be entered in special fields;
- geolocation of the accident scene. This option becomes available if the GPS system is enabled on the device;
- circumstances of the accident. You need to select them from the list;
- accident scheme. Drivers will also be offered several options to choose from. If there is no suitable one among them, you will have to draw it yourself, take a picture and attach the file;
- personal data of witnesses (if any).
Then, by sending SMS to their phone numbers, the car owners confirm their intention to send the document and provide email addresses to receive copies of the protocol.
When the file arrives by e-mail, you can consider the process complete and leave the accident scene.
What else is important to know about the European protocol
In general, the behaviour of drivers after an accident, if you plan to draw up an electronic protocol, is practically no different from situations with a police call. The main thing is that the cars must not be moved from the collision site, they must be photographed from all sides and calm down. If both drivers do not blame each other, there are no injuries, and the damage is minor, you can try to resolve the situation yourself. If one of the parties to the accident is behaving aggressively, insisting on entering incorrect information, then it is still worth calling the police.
